STOP PRESS - 31.10.04
The Government's Gambling Bill as it stands could drive
piers out of business by outlawing traditional amusement arcades in favour
of "super-casinos", on the pretext of protecting the under-18s.
Gaming machines provide the principal source of revenue for most piers.
The Society is liaising with the trade bodies BACTA (British Amusement & Catering
Trade Association) and BALPPA (British Association of Leisure Parks Piers & Attractions)
and has written to the Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell pointing out the
perceived threat to seaside piers.
