Statement regarding Grand Pier, Weston-super-Mare
July 2008
Compiled by ANTHONY WILLS

The tragic blaze which in little more than an hour destroyed the Pavilion building on Weston Grand pier in the early hours of Monday 28 July has been very comprehensively covered on radio and television and in the press, and the Society’s officers have given numerous interviews.

The National Piers Society deeply regrets the loss of this very fine and commercially highly successful Grade II listed pier, and extends its heartfelt sympathy to the new owners and staff as well as the people of Weston-super-Mare, whose deep affection for this historic structure has been clearly demonstrated.

The Society is extremely relieved that there were no injuries or fatalities, and sincerely hopes that support will be forthcoming both locally and nationally to enable the pier to be restored and once more enjoyed by thousands of visitors.

Full coverage of the event will appear in the autumn issue of PIERS, which will be sent to members in October.
