LOST PIERS
To date, 36 pleasure piers
have been lost from around the UK coastline and these are listed
here alphabetically.
The dates that appear below each heading are, generally, the
opening and destruction/demolition dates for the main pier structure.
In many cases (for example Withernsea), land-based entrance buildings
still exist, many years after the loss of the pier.
The pier at Douglas, which was dismantled and re-erected at Rhos-on-Sea,
is regarded as one pier.
Ventnor Royal Victoria pier was rebuilt several times. However,
in easch case the original sub-structure was used and it is,
therefore, considered a single pier.
